Custom designed sectional sofa, ottoman and rug by Arcadia Design and Stitch

My clients needed a sofa that would fit their family needs for a large comfortable but firm sectional with plenty of room for friends and family to converse and watch tv.
We designed it to be 10′ by 10′ with 3 seat cushions and a dozen down and feather filled pillows for the back. A most amazing chenille fabric made in Italy by Osborne and Little (Croisette Beaulieu Linen) fabric was specified for the sofa . Fabrics from Pierre Frey were chosen for my clients love for Africa . They were used on accent pillows (African Safari Sable and Selim Granata)

We needed to design an ottoman that would look amazing and  withstand the kids jumping on and off of it. The ottoman was 60″ x60″ upholstered in a chocolate brown leather button tufted with nail heads along the bottom.

The rug was a difficult decision because the client wanted a really light colored rug but it also needed to wear well. The best and only choice was wool, it wears well looks wonderful and lasts a lifetime with proper care.

We still need a couple of items to finish the space off, accessories for the ottoman, perhaps a large tray? I would also love to add some wonderful draperies, what do you think?

Hardware and Draperies by Arcadia Design and Stitch

Our clients beautiful Paradise Valley, Arizona Dining Room needed a bit of light, pattern and softness to create an inviting space. We first removed the existing dark wood shutters to let in the light, added a couple of antique sconces from France and added custom hardware and draperies. The 100% linen fabric we chose to make the drapes is one by one of my favorite designers from the UK, Anna French, Salina Ribbon AW1378 available from Thibaut Fabrics.

I had custom drapery hardware made by  Helser Brothers , all their hardware is made here in Chandler, Arizona. I believe in specifying products with amazing quality and in supporting products made in USA and made local. There price are competitive with Restoration Hardware but they are made to order the exact size that is needed, no adjustable rods. Paradise Valley Backyard with a view

Our clients Paradise Valley backyard has a view to die for but they were in dire need to have their patio cushions all reupholstered, a new umbrella cover and a few chairs to surround the new fire pit. My client chose a Sunbrella Dupioni in color crimson for the large cushions, the pillows are made with Perennials Outdoor Fabrics , Very Terry in white and the fun red coral print also by Perennials, Island Coral in red.

For around their new fire pit they wanted a very comfortable adirondack chair in teak so we chose ones made by Kingsley and Bates.

Patio Cushion Redo for a Scottsdale Silverleaf Residence

Our client beautiful home is nestled in a private enclave of custom estate homes and intimate retreats tucked into the canyons of the McDowell Mountains in North Scottsdale Arizona where the downtown and mountain views are amazing.

Arcadia Design and Stitch had just finished refreshing the look of their family room by re-upholstering their sectional sofa, two club chairs, ottoman, new roman shades and accessories. (We will need to take some good photos and share them with you in another post.)

Our client had a head start, they had great furniture to work with from OW Lee “Classico Collection” , all the furniture needed was a fresh powder coating and new cushions. We worked together to chose a wonderfully fun blue, white and yellow color palate to brighten up the exterior and complement the color of the pool. All the fabrics we chose were from Perennials and the brush fringe on the pillows from Giati Fabrics. The fabric on all the cushions is Chameleon color french lilac, style number 900-77, for the welting and the back of the pillows we used Rough’n Rowdy color Blanca style 955-28. Custom box pillows in Swizzle color French Lilac style 795-77 with Giatti Terry Cloth Brush Fringe, Crema #GTF-29 and my favorite fun pillows in Holy Mackerel color Sunfish style 180-129 with Brush Fringe by Giati Fabrics Laguna Blue / Crema #GBF-25.

Outdoor draperies in Paradise Valley, Part 2

We finally installed the outdoor draperies for my clients Paradise Valley back yard. While she had a covered patio it was still was in full sun all afternoon.
We ordered double powdered coated hardware by Helser Brothers , a drapery hardware company located here in Chandler, Arizona. We used a Sunbrella sheer called Shadow color snow. It’s a beautiful sheer fabric made from 100% solution dyed acrylic that wears well and can be used inside your home with out lining it.

Creating beautiful outdoor spaces take time. I know that sometimes we all would love to have what we want now, but it is a design process.

First, you need to make the decision to commit to your project whether it’s patio cushions that needs updating to just adding outdoor furniture, curtains or accessories. What ever you choose to do it will take time and money ( you need a budget).
Second, you can choose to hire a designer like us to help facilitate your project or do it on your own. I believe hiring a qualified interior design firm like Arcadia Design and Stitch might cost you a bit more up front, but in the long run you will save money. We can offer suggestions on paint colors, fabrics, furniture placement, lighting etc. We also bring years of expertise to the table along with our knowledge of the products we sell.

 

Need help selecting a color palette for your outdoor patio?

Today is officially the first day of summer! Here in Arizona it feels like summer has been here for weeks already and we are actually counting the days until cooler weather . Where ever you are living summer does mean pool time and outdoor time and if you made the decision to re-upholster your outdoor cushions you will first need to select a color palate.
While shopping for a client outdoor fabrics at the Design Center in Scottsdale yesterday I had so much fun looking all all the amazing patterns, textures and colors, the possibilities are endless. Putting together a color palette of fabrics could be daunting especially if you do not know where to look. I know you could search online or go to a discount fabric store but your best solution is to hire a designer to put it all together for you.
You might pay a for a few hours of expertise but it is worth every penny. We know where to shop, we are able to purchase at a designer net , we know what fabrics will wear well especially here in Phoenix, we have our own workrooms to make the cushions fit perfectly and we make sure it’s all done right.
Here are three color palettes that I put together for you to be inspired. I love putting together different textures, terrycloth , chenille sailcloth, duck all mixed together with big and little stripes,  and big and little prints. Each outdoor fabric I chose whether its Link Outdoor, Donghia or Perennials are all made using Sunbrella technology and have a 5 year limited warranty

Outdoor Rugs I love

I love rugs! I love decorating with rugs especially outside and especially living here in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona where we can use our outdoor living spaces almost everyday of the year. When I design a space whether it’s inside or outside I start with the  ground up. Choosing a rug first and building the color palatte around the rug.

Outdoor rugs have come a long way in the past few years, it seems every catalogue I get in the mail, there they are. The technology for making amazing quality rugs is all in the fibers that the rug is made of, 100% solution-dyed acrylic technology . This technology when done correctly makes your rug fade resistant, stain resistant, mildew resistant, easy-to-clean and so very soft.

My home, inside and out is full of Dash and Albert rugs, I have two in the kitchen, one in the laundry room, one in each bathroom and three outside at the entries and under the dining table. They have been there for over a year and have seen a multitude of stains, with four kids, a dog , bunny and 5 chickens running around you can only imagine what has wound up on the rugs!  Cleaning is a breeze, vacuming inside and hosing off outside just adding dish soap or bleach when needed and let air dry. What can be easier?

Don’t be fooled by imitations, because believe me there are many that you should stay away from. I was in a pinch one day and picked up a rug for the entry from Target “Threshold” brand, what a disappointment,  it first glance it seemed to look okay  but as soon as I unrolled it I knew I was not going to be happy. The feel was stiff and rough the fibers were all fuzzy, after a week it was so dirty and when I tried to clean it with the same techniques that I use on my other rugs but that was futile. The only place for that rug is in the recycle bin!

Get Ready for Summer!!!!

 

With the first day of summer around the corner, the pool is the perfect temperature to float all day, the nights are warm enough to hang out for a dive in movie,  Barb-b-ques and s’mores . What are you waiting for? Get your outdoor furniture and cushions all cleaned and get ready to enjoy!

The following steps will have you enjoying your outdoor space in no time

1. Clean it up, thats right get out there and get cleaning, a good power washing or if you have zippers take off the covers and throw them in the wash. Yes! you can wash your Sunbrella fabrics, gentle cycle no fabric softeners just air dry when done. I do this every couple of months especially all the pillows on my fire pit benches the birds love pooping on them and (I always find a bit of chocolate and marshmallow remnants  from S’more night ) . When its cleaned, keep it clean weekly, dust and dirt accumulates in the fibers of the fabric making them look dirty.
If you have an awning or an umbrella, first brush off any loose dirt and hose it down. Prepare a cleaning solution of water and mild soap such as Woolite or Dawn dishwashing liquid and use a soft bristle brush to clean the fabric. Let the cleaning solution sink into the fabric, thoroughly rinse and air dry. You’ll be surprised at how much impact a simple spring clean can have on your outdoor space.  

2. Be Inspired
After all the cleaning you realize you really need to redo those cushions. Be inspired, your winter vacation took you to the Caribbean and you you want it to see blues or do you dream of a trip to the South of France with yellow the color sunflowers ? The possibilities are endless with the amazing fabrics that are now available. 

3. Accessorize
Create your “outdoor room” by incorporating the same accessories found indoors into your outdoor living space. A Rug from Dash and Albert defines seating or dining areas and adds a touch of comfort to the great outdoors.  Hang draperies made from amazing outdoor sheers. Use great lanterns from Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware.

Nature can be your best accessory, it provides color, fragrance and on sunny days,  shade. We definitely need shade here in sunny Arizona . Group together planters of different sizes and colors and plant the herbs or flowers that will provide you with extra pops of color and texture for months to come.
